#BehindTheStory - Crow Magic

Crow Magic, is about a Native American shape shifter. I was asked how I attained my interest and knowledge of Native American legend and lore. My response became a story.

After the Civil War, my great-great grandfather, Gardner Avery, left his New York regiment to settle with his wife, Helen Greenleaf Kern, in a rural area near Grand Rapids, Michigan, named Jamestown. He kept a diary, which remains in the family, of his daily activities and expenses. On the land he purchased to farm, a tribe of Native Americans resided. The couple let the Potawatomi continue to live and hunt on the land.

Potawatomi Warrior
Over time they developed close friendships with many of the tribal folk. My great-great-grandmother became very close to the medicine woman of the tribe who taught her the use of herbs in food and healing. The Avery’s interest in the art of the tribe eventually led to them learning how to make the Native American pottery. Through stories shared around meals, they learned the spirituality of the Native Americans.

At the time, Grand Rapids was one of the first large scale trading posts used by the Ottawa, Potawatomi and the Chippewa. My ancestors learned valuable information from their relationships with these tribes, which lead them to have a successful farm and healthy family. Despite the Avery’s wishes, the government forced the tribe off the land and into a reservation. According to family legend, Helen and her dearest friend spent the last days together. After hugs and many tears, she stood in a field and watched the tribe travel until they were out of sight.

The information, stories, and traditions my ancestors learned have been passed down through the
generations. I grew up listening to the stories my grandmother told of visiting the farm and her grandparents. She also shared aspects of the Native American spirituality and showed us how similar it is to Christianity.

In the 1950s, my grandparents purchased property and build a cottage on Coldwater Lake, not far from Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. We spent many summers at the cottage, where we collected arrowheads we found in the local sand pits. A Chippewa family owned a cottage near ours and “Indian Dave” would share their stories, dances, and traditions with us while we sat around a bonfire.

I could say the knowledge of herbals and spirituality lives in me because of the ties of my family with the tribes of Michigan and beginning embraced by each generation of my family.

To add to my family history, my cousin’s father was from a Seminole tribe and my brother-in-law is a descendant of a French Trader and Blackfoot Indian woman. Funny, how a person with the Welch/Swedish/German heritage I have, can be neatly blended with Native American legend and lore. Grandmother used to tell us that our legacy isn’t only family blood but also the land we live in.

Indian Dave
Eagle Dance is Book 2 in the Legend of the Spirit series and features another Native American shifter from the Chippewa tribe who is looking for a special woman who will love him for who and what he is. Indian Dave's spirit makes an appearance.

Six Sentence Sunday - Crow Magic

Smooth tanned skin rippled as his rigid muscles flexed. His eyes radiated intensity, gold flecks mingling in the black irises. Raven hair hung over his broad shoulders as he moved. He gazed at her with desire until the reality of her situation sank in. She’d just experienced the appetizer and the time had come for the main course. Bring it on!

Meet Dyami Schafer – Hero of Eagle Dance

One story produced a series…the Legend of the Spirit Series.
Native American shifters learn to follow their hearts to find love.

When I finished writing Crow Magic, a lovely story featuring a Shawnee Crow shifter named Tecumseh "Seth" Crowe, an eagle visited me.

The large bird sat on my porch railing looking me over with golden eyes and flexed his powerful talons. Through a mist the creature shifted into an incredibly sexy man. His eyes were the same gold as the eagles. His appearance dominated my porch but he moved in a graceful manner.

He stood tall with a naked barrel chest and when he turned I noticed a huge tattoo of wings covering his back from shoulders to under his waistband. Dressed in baggy jeans and worn boots he had a rugged sexiness. His black hair cut in a modified military crop looked like velvet. Spiked on top was white while the sides were tipped with grey.  I’d never seen anything like it. He ran his hands through the silky layers and explained like the eagle, his hair would change to white as he ages but he assured me he’s in the prime of his life. I couldn’t agree more. Wowza!

He flashed a quick smile but I was captivated with his golden eyes.

Dyami comes from a Chippewa tribe and is currently a Conservation Officer for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in a secret division used to catch wildlife poachers. When he was a kid he spent his summers with relatives at their cottage on Coldwater Lake in Michigan. Even though his name means “EAGLE”, his uncle called him "Little Otter" because he would spend more time swimming than fishing. He still likes to fish but prefers dancing with a beautiful woman.

He is looking for a gal to live in his heart, warm his bed and love him for who/what he is. He loves to dance ladies! A friend told him to fill out an application for 1 Night Stand. He is seriously contemplating the idea.

Pick up Eagle Dance, 2nd story in the Legend of the Spirit Series,   to see what happens.

Tuesday Teaser - Spirit of the Legend Series

August is SHIFTER MONTH

I spent my childhood summers at our family cottage on Coldwater Lake in Michigan. A friend of my uncle’s and a member of the local Chippewa tribe rented the cottage next door for several summers. Indian Dave would thrill my cousins and me with legends and dances of his people. He taught us the importance and spirituality regarding the balance of nature. My favorite stories of people who could shift from human to animal at will influenced me to write my own versions. My cousin and I would often wonder if the fox or eagle we saw where Indian Dave or one of his friends. Who knows…perhaps they were!

Little did I know, those stories heard around a campfire would become fodder for the Legend of the Spirit series.

Legend of the Spirit book 1 -
Lucy Richards is tired of being timid around men. Hoping to overcome her fears and feel like a real woman, she turns to Madame Eve to find a man who will fulfill that goal. Eve arranges a one-night stand with a handsome Shawnee shaman who will teach Lucy to use her womanly power and take her to unimaginable heights.
Shape shifter Seth Crowe is a Keeper of the Spiritual Law who carries souls from darkness to light, and enjoys using his body to accomplish his magic.

Tucked away in the Castillo Poconos Resort, Seth helps Lucy find spiritual and sexual freedom, never dreaming he might find his own mate in the bargain.

Legend of the Spirit series book 2 -
Dyami Schafer, a Native American from the Chippewa tribe, leads a lonely life due to his large size and unusual appearance. When his nesting instinct sets in, he turns to Madame Eve and 1Night Stand to help him find his spirit mate. Or at least a woman who accepts him as an eagle shifter.

Amanda Collins never stopped loving the Chippewa boy she knew from her childhood. Maybe a night with a Native American man will help her forget the past and let her move on with her life.

Sometimes, it’s necessary to take a step into the past before dancing into the future. With the help of Madame Eve, will the Spirit of the Eagle carry Dyami and Amanda?

The Legend of the Spirit series has hot Native American avian shifters who finally allow their spirit animal to give them a dose of their own “medicine”. Meet, Tecumseh “Seth” Crowe… a dark and very powerful shaman in Crow Magic. Then enjoy a dance with Dyami Schafer, a sexy Chippewa with golden eyes in Eagle Dance.

Crow Magic Excerpt:
“I am a man who is yours tonight, Lucy.” He walked toward her with arms out from his sides, exposing his nudity. “Draw on the power within you. Look at me. Overcome your apprehension of men. Have I not shown you gentleness?”

She nodded and approached him while tugging the strap of her sundress.

“Keep your dress on. Take it off when you are ready. This night is about you. Explore my body, learn from it, and take whatever you want. You are in control.”

He led her to the center of the blanket and faced her. She stood still with her fingertips resting on his waist. Cupping her face, he lost himself in her eyes.

“I am your instrument to use tonight. Open yourself up and delve into this opportunity I offer. I am yours to command. Do you understand what I’m saying?”

“I think so.” She considered his offer. “What do I do?”

“Follow your feminine intuition.” He couldn’t hold back a chuckle. “Touch me, tickle me, beat me, kiss me, bite me, lick me, suck me…whatever you want. Take whatever you need from me to strengthen you.”

In the moonlight, an endearing, innocent blush spread across her face. Amazing how a woman who lived her life in fear caused by abuse could be so naive of her own sensual power. If she knew her potential, she could bring him to his knees.

Please, bring me to my knees.

Eagle Dance EXCERPT
She brushed the gray tips and white strands of hair that gave him such untamed nobility. With a finger, she traced his face from his temple to his jaw, across his lips, then scraping her nails along the fine hair under his chin. A man of his enormous size would be capable of great strength, and a gal could easily lose herself in his arms for more than one night. His gaze intensified under her scrutiny.

“What do you see when you look at me?” he asked and lowered his eyes. Sinfully long lashes brushed his cheeks.

She considered him to be the most gorgeous man alive. His eyes mesmerized her. Some would consider the unusual color to be eerie, but she saw a whirlwind of emotions, from pain to hope, drawing her into his soul. Did his unusual appearance cause issues and uncertainty in his life? Despite his intimidating frame, he exhibited control and gentle qualities in the tender way he’d held her when they danced and the way he’d admitted his soft spot for animals. In arms like his, a woman could find paradise in many ways.

She cupped his face and forced him to meet her gaze. “I see a handsome, mystical warrior from another world.”

“Handsome, huh? I think you need your vision checked. I am nothing more than a simple Chippewa from Michigan.” His mouth was inches from hers. “However, I can be magical and take you wherever you want to go.”

“Then dance with me,” she whispered.

My Writing Process Blog Tour

Thank you Libby Waterford for involving me in this awesome blog tour.

Libby writes California-set steamy contemporary romances. She lives in Los Angeles with her family and works off her weekly pilgrimage to in–N-Out by swimming and climbing the city’s hidden staircases. She’s currently working on a trio of novellas that take place during the reunion/commencement weekend at a New England liberal arts college. Passionate History will be released soon by Decadent Publishing. I love reunion stories so I’ll be first in line top pick this one up!

***************************************************

What am I currently working on?
I write novellas for the 1 Night Stand series from Decadent Publishing. Right now, I am editing a steamy Native American eagle shifter romance, Eagle Dance. It’s the second book in the “Legend of the Spirit” series. (Crow Magic was the first book.) In between edits I’m working on three more Native American shifter stories for 1NS.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?
I write contemporary erotic romance and I'm currently playing with Native American shifters (crow, eagle, hawk and falcon). I use sensuality and eroticism to emphasize the spiritualism of sex and how it creates a unique bond between lovers.

Why do I write what I do?
I was told by my mentor to “write what you know”. Growing up in Michigan and spending time near a Chippewa Reservation I became enthralled with the legends and stories of the people. The tales of animal spirits and shifters show how man/nature/woman work together to create balance in life. I center my novellas on these ideas and collect my research on Tribes of the Great Lakes Region. I give special thanks to two friends, Marion Roth & Ann Orr, for my Chippewa education.

How does my writing process work?
I get an idea in my head and it wormholes me! I have to write it down! My over active imagination often creates more than one story at a time so I often work on multiple stories. Once each story is like a movie in my head and I feel like I’m simply recording it. After a story is complete, I print a hard copy and read over it making corrections with a red pen. Once all changes/corrections are complete, I submit to my publisher and prepare for edits.

Sneak Peek Sunday - WIP Eagle Dance

Today's Sneak Peek is from a work in progress I am writing for the Decadent Publishing 1 Night Stand Series. It is part of a four book Native American shifter collection I am working on, Crow Magic being the first. I hope you enjoy this sample.
Dyami Shaffer an Chippewa Eagle shifter

Over a few beers he confided in a friend who listened while he celebrated his own pity party. Reaching his limit and fed up of women staring at him with fear or disgust, he needed to vent. His large size and dark Native American features didn’t help him find dates in the past. Women of his tribe whispered of his attributes and feared him. On top of everything, his nesting instinct unfortunately kicked in recently. He wanted a good woman who would accept and love him for the rest of his life. The buddy told him about the elite dating service, 1 Night Stand, where one night often led to a love match.  His spirit nurtured the seed of hope planted in his thoughts and persuaded him to fill out the paperwork for a blind date.

After months of waiting, he stood on his porch drinking his morning coffee when he saw a hawk fly overhead. His people considered hawks to be messengers. With an impatient heart, he checked his emails and discovered a message from Madame Eve.

Following a day of work, he drove almost 700 miles.  During the trip he fought poor weather and spent hours talking to himself to stay focused. He eventually gave in to weariness and spent the night in a cheap hotel along Interstate 80 planning to arrive at his destination with vim and vigor. Surely the lonely journey would not have been made in vain.

A plow rumbled on the road behind him creating large mounds of snow. The world grew white and cleansed in purity. Evergreens supported heavy boughs much like the weight he carried. The trunks of the giant firs stood strong, bearing the spirits of the earth. The crisp air filled his lungs. His spirit fluttered with hope.

He clasped the totem pendant he wore around his neck and closed his eyes. The small eagle mounted on an arrowhead represented his linage. The rough edges dug into his palm yet gave him comfort. In his culture some legends were true; such as those who are born with a totem animal or a spirit guide. His ancestors were blessed by the Great Spirit. In every generation one man would not only be born with a spirit animal who resides within one’s soul but also the gift of shifting from man to that of his animal.

Drawing from the strength of tribe, he prayed he made the right decision. The spirit of the eagle fluttered against his heart telling him to continue his journey. Since countless moments make a lifetime, a particular chain of them brought him to the place he needed to be.  Madame Eve found a woman who would accept his secret and dance with him. With confidence he climbed the steps to the main building of the Castillo Poconos Resort.

Sneak Peak Sunday

Today's Sneek Peek is from Crow Magic.

Before they entered the woods, he stopped. Taking hold of her face, he gazed into her eyes. The world around her disappeared while she focused on the handsome man in front of her. The lines around his sexy lips grew taut, and she had the urge to kiss them until they softened. Energy from his fingertips coursed through her. She leaned into him.

“Life is a series of steps along a journey that each of us must take. Are you certain you want to continue this path with me tonight?”

“Yes.”

Slipping his fingers into her hair, he lowered his head. Instinct kicked in and her arms went around his waist. His sinewy muscles flexed under the silken shirt while his breath fluttered over her mouth. He traced the line of her chin with his lips, burying his face in her hair. He tasted her neck and she yielded to him. Heat traveled through her to settle between her thighs.

“Your skin is the blush of the palest flower.” He inhaled. “Hmm…I smell honeysuckle. You have the most beautiful hair I’ve ever seen. It is so vibrant with fierce, turbulent colors. Inside you is an inferno of sexuality yearning to be released. My angel, come with me into the darkness so I may help you find light.”

Coolness replaced the heat of his touch and he guided her into the forest. Afraid of shadows as a child, she longed to embrace the mystery of the night and inhaled the aromas of pine and mossy ground surrounding her. The hoot of a waking owl called out to its mate.

Tucked away in the Castillo Poconos Resort, Seth helps Lucy find spiritual and sexual freedom, never dreaming he might find his own mate in the bargain.

Supernatural Sensualtiy Saturday

Native Americans are very in tune to nature.
This special relationship may be powerful and sensual.
Please enjoy this supernatural sensuality moment from Crow Magic.
New Release April 26

Am I falling into hell? Will I be reborn through fire? No fear, only distinctive thoughts ran through her mind. I’m warm and happy. I believe in the spiritual existence of myself. I will be strong!

“Oh Great Spirit, thank you for your assistance and we honor all the unseen forces that have provided us with support and blessings this night and for this special request.” The cadence of his voice anchored her mind. “I give thanks for the light and wisdom of the flames and ask the energy be transferred to this lost angel, Lucy.”

Hearing her name, she focused on him. He had removed his shirt, his bare chest shining with sweat while his arms commanded the night. As every muscle rippled, he emitted supernatural power, sending erotic shivers through her. With a quick bow, he began an ancient dance, moving in a series of mystical twists and turns. Through the graceful movements, he became god-like in the candlelight. Not able to take her eyes off the shaman dance, she caught sight of a large tattoo of black wings covering most of his back with the wing tips hidden under the edge of his pants.

The flames continued to stroke her without pain. Tongues of pleasure lapped her skin. She closed her eyes, the vision of black feathers embracing her returned. Was it her crow spirit or his? Power coursed through her veins and the inferno absorbed fear and apprehension. The face of a crow appeared and whispered her name. A violent renewal of forgotten vigor and confidence emerged. Inhibitions developed into sexual recognition. Fiery fingers caressed her torso and cupped her breasts. Her back arched in pleasure.

“May the flame continue to burn and always remind Lucy of her power as a woman.” His voice drew her attention. She managed to open her eyes. Firelight painted his rigid muscles in gold and bronze. A lean warrior stood his ground, calling upon the elements to do his bidding. Silken wings emerged from his back and flexed behind him and in one fluid motion he unlocked his grasp and with his palms turned, plunged his arms downward.

“So be it!” His voice roared with the blare of many voices.

Crow Shifter = YUMMY

Shape shifting has become a common theme in today’s popular fiction.  According to Wikipedia, shape shifting occurs when a being (usually human) either (1) has the ability to change its shape into that of another person, creature, or other entity or (2) finds its shape involuntarily changed by someone else.
In contemporary romance, shifters are sexy as hell.
I love reading stories with shifters and never thought I could write one until I watched some crows in my yard.  As a child, my grandmother told me to never speak ill of the dead in the presence of a crow since these are the chosen animals to carry spirits.  The crow may be carrying the spirit of the person you are speaking of.
Watching the crows I noticed the beauty of the silky black feathers.  The vision of said feathers brushing seductively against pale skin kicked my imagination into overdrive and created a Native American shaman who could shift into crow.
My muse has wings and was delighted when my mind wandered in the direction of Native American Crow legends. Deep in research, I found the picture shown above and a story for 1 Night Stand unfolded.

Coming April 26
