#SneakPeekSunday - Crow Magic

In this Sneak Peak:
Our hero in Crow Magic is in his crow animal form
and he has been caught spying on the woman he has a blind date with.

*********

His mission of spying on the woman Madame Eve matched for him changed into an all-morning event. The minute Lucy walked out of the cottage he’d sensed her spirit calling to him and begging release. It was apparent as soon as she stepped off the porch to follow the crow that she would make a transformation easily. Her innocence brought out his protective streak, yet he wanted to teach her everything and take her to heights of passion. His pride swelled that he’d been the chosen one for the task.

Of all the people he’d met and the women he experienced intimately, she hypnotized him with her words. He lusted after not only her beauty but her soul, with the hesitant demeanor and even her wild hair separating her from all others. Beautiful organic shades of red and orange were revealed as the locks danced in the wind. Never had he seen hair like that before. So alive!

Her pale skin altered his opinion of the color white. He’d always considered the pallid shade boring. Her skin was that of an angel, light as the beach sand, smooth as milk and honey. He recognized the presence of the Water Spirit and noticed a calming of her aura. Her invitation to sit with her on the beach delighted him. He’d smelled magic in the blood he drew on her wrist. Her lovely eyes focused his attention on the eagerness of her soul yearning to be set free, stirring a longing obscured under personal responsibilities. His crow begged to claim her. Could it be possible she possessed a spirit animal akin to his own?

Because of her keen response to the bird, he predicted her reaction to the man would be more fervent. His cock grew hard, his palms itched to touch the milky skin and he hungered to taste her.

“You have been a mouse too long.” He whispered to the wind, “It is time to let the fiery angel fly. Trust me. Believe in me. I will show you how to soar.”

The crow within demanded to possess her. Mine.

A Little Afternoon Delight from Crow Magic

A busy day? Take a few minutes (or hours) grab a cup of tea,  a book and curl up on a cozy seat. Join me on the porch if you wish. I won't interrupt since I'm reading too.
Here's a little snippet from my book Crow's Magic.

Birds chattering pulled her from sleep. She wiggled under the cozy comforter to steal one more moment of utter bliss before rubbing her face to wake up. Pushing flyaway hair past her ears, Lucy opened her eyes and stretched. Arriving late the night before, she’d unpacked then gone straight to bed. Her best friend had convinced her to try Madame Eve’s 1Night Stand, and now miles from home, she lay in the Rose Cabin on Cherry Lane, a private but exquisite cottage at the Castillo Resort in the Poconos Mountains.

She took a deep breath and rose to the beauty of a new day and the possibilities of the coming evening. Sunlight dappled the floors of her cabin. Finding the long terry robe the resort supplied, she pulled it on then pulled back the cream-colored curtains to allow the morning radiance to enter and spread its cheerfulness. The delicate scent from the white roses in a vase on the nightstand mingled with the pine and cedar cabin. She picked up a card next to the flowers.

Lucy,
May you discover the magical power of the mountains and their crystal clear waters.
May the life force of the woods stir your soul.
May you learn from the spirit of the crow.
Tecumseh will help you fly if you believe in him.
Madame Eve

He had only one name. Not Bob, or Roger, but Tecumseh, and without doubt, Native American. Names held power and his name sounded powerful. What kind of person had the name Tecumseh? Was he a real man, a shaman or a spirit?

“Enough worrying about tonight, time to enjoy the day.” She adjusted the sheets of the Queen Ann bed and smoothed the antique quilt bright with turquoise and shades of fuchsia. An impressive painting of a floral meadow and a large tree near a lake hung on the wall and she made a mental note to explore outside to discover if the meadow was local. She gazed at the bed, wondering what the night would bring and shuddered with anticipation.

#SneakPeakSunday - The Earring Thief in Crow Magic

Today we are featuring a Sneak Peek from Crow Magic,
a contemporary romance with a Native American Crow Shifter Hero.

The scene featured is the day of Lucy's blind date Madame Eve of 1 Night Stand arranged. She's rather nervous but relaxes while visiting with a crow on her porch. The large bird entertains her with typical crow behavior when she shares a slice of toast with the bird. Little does she know, she will meet up with crow again, but in his human form.

Putting her head into her hands, she croaked, “Can you believe it? I’m so stupid. Here I am talking to a bird like he’s a person when I should be getting ready for my date. Maybe I should pack my bags and leave.”

The delicate beat of wings whispered in her ears and the rocker moved from the weight of him as he landed. She sat up and wiped a tear from her cheek. He began tugging at her earring.

“Really? Again with the earring?” She tried to lean out of reach. “I suppose it’s true that crows like to steal shiny objects and always act the clown. Is it because you seek the bright and shiny aspects of life?”

With unrelenting focus, he elongated his neck.

“Or are you getting tired of my reading?” She shooed him away.

With a sharp backward pull, he yanked the silver loop out of her ear and took to the sky.

Jumping from her seat with a yelp, she raced off the porch. “Damn you!” She shook her fist at him. “Give that back to me!”

The silver hoop glistened in the tight hold of his beak. He taunted her. Keeping her eyes on him, she walked away from the cottage. As he flew close, he emitted a throaty grumble before flying toward a path leading into the woods. The mission of retrieving the earring became a game of follow the leader

She sought to have the jewelry returned, but the words from Madame Eve’s note haunted her. May you learn from the spirit of the Crow. Something told her to follow the thief. She ran along the well-traveled dirt trail and he glided, beckoning her to follow.

The canopy of trees shadowed  the corridor, the cool air fragrant with pine, cedar and sweet fern. Woodland flowers dotted the route. She ducked under a low pine branch, giddiness swelling within her. Taking pleasure in the sudden happiness, she followed the path until the forest opened to a field and a lake.

A little winded, she slowed her pace, becoming conscious of the beauty surrounding her. She stood in the same meadow depicted in the painting above her bed. Flying to a large oak tree in the center of the meadow, he slowed then perched.

Mountains climbed from the edges of the lake reaching for the cloudless sky. Envisioning she was the first human to witness such beauty, she listened to the whispering pines, lapping waves, and songs of the living earth. No boats graced the water, no calling children played, only pure nature. Clean air filled her lungs with every purifying breath. Dropping her robe to take in the rays of sunlight, she journeyed to the beach. Enchanted, she extended her arms and waded into the water in expectation of a baptism by nature.

She imagined the spirits of the natural world calling out to her and instructing to let go of the  loneliness. A simple task of emotional spring cleaning so room could be made for the physical intimacy she craved. Standing with the water surrounding her legs, an eerie power seeped into her pores. Tingling pulses in rhythm with the waves traveled through her cells.

Looking at her own reflection in the water, she watched a grin find its way from her heart to her lips. A shadow circled above, still carrying her earring. In a bold move, she flexed her fingers in invitation for him to land on her arm. Tucking his head, he arched his wings and flapped in short, quick strokes, accepting her unspoken summons. He landed on her wrist and dug his feet into her skin. A drop of blood beaded under a claw. Shifting his weight, he gazed into her eyes. Held in the ebony pools, her soul reached out to his. A longing to soar on the waves of the wind made her arms ache. Her vision grew hazy. The image of an ancient warrior with copper skin, strong brow and chiseled features, flashed in her mind then disappeared.

He dipped his head and broke the gaze then flexed his toes, apparently uneasy about the wound on her wrist. Lucy blinked.

“It doesn’t hurt.” She gave him a small smile.

After a gentle game of tug-o-war and an unsuccessful attempt to retrieve her earring from his beak, she tapped her fingers on his back to distract his attention in hopes that he’d drop it.

But content with his position on her arm, he held the earring tight. With her arm extended slightly, she left the water and sat on the warm sand of the beach. She tucked one foot under her while keeping one knee raised to rest her arm and support his weight.

Gazing upon him with wonder as he sat at ease, she slid her palm leisurely over his back and stroked his lustrous feathers. The heat of the animal greeted her skin and a low, throaty sound drifted to her ears.

“You are so beautiful; I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything or anyone so perfect.”

Desire sparked in her womb and surged through her veins. The sudden liberation made way for the stronger yearning  to fly and soar on the winds of passion. In the daydream, strong hands touched her, drawing out her feminine cravings. Erotic visions of lying under a dark warrior flamed her desire to life. She imagined charcoal eyes and a masculine face framed by wild strands of black hair.

Inner strength rose and unlocked the door of reservations and opened it for the pleasure of human contact. She welcomed the strange power that greeted her. The crow  gave a low purr then shuddered and flew to the oak tree with the silver earring still in his grasp.

“You’re not going to give my earring back, are you?” She shook her fist. Pacing under the tree, she called out to him several times “Please, give it back. Crow!”

So very unusual from any animal, or human for that matter, that she’d ever known. Perhaps magic does exist. Something fascinating had transpired between her and the creature, yet she didn’t understand it all.

Without a glance at her, he focused on the mountains before him. With a deep sigh, she paused again to absorb the beauty of the panoramic view and thought of Madame Eve’s words. May you discover the magical power of the mountains and their crystal clear waters.

Majestic mountains jutted into the heavens from the green robe of earth and trees. She breathed in the enchanted air.

“Maybe it’s time to quit holding on to all things of the past.” For some reason the world seemed brighter. “If you truly are a spirit, then I guess I just have to accept defeat. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. However, if you change your mind, I’ll be in the cottage until tomorrow and you can bring it back to me.”

Without a sound, he crouched then leapt into the air, taking flight over the lake and out of sight. The loss of the earring didn’t affect her as deeply as she’d thought it would. Her adventure with her feathered friend materialized into a lesson of self-growth. Her new, fragile, emotional state developed into a fresh beginning with the confidence to prepare for her date.

Six Sentence Sunday - Crow Magic

Smooth tanned skin rippled as his rigid muscles flexed. His eyes radiated intensity, gold flecks mingling in the black irises. Raven hair hung over his broad shoulders as he moved. He gazed at her with desire until the reality of her situation sank in. She’d just experienced the appetizer and the time had come for the main course. Bring it on!

#HumpDayHottie from Crow Magic

“I am your instrument to use tonight. Open yourself up and delve into this opportunity I offer. I am yours to command. Do you understand what I’m saying?”

“I think so.” She considered his offer. “What do I do?”

“Follow your feminine intuition.” He couldn’t hold back a chuckle. “Touch me, tickle me, beat me, kiss me, bite me, lick me, suck me…whatever you want. Take whatever you need from me to strengthen you.”

In the moonlight, an endearing, innocent blush spread across her face. Amazing how a woman who lived her life in fear caused by abuse could be so naive of her own sensual power. If she knew her potential, she could bring him to his knees.

Please, bring me to my knees.

#FirstLineFriday - Join the Fun

First lines of a book are meant to capture the reader's attention, give a clue to the story or set the stage for the entire novel.

When we play this game, let's use the first FIVE lines of any chapter.
It can be from you own work (published or WIP) or a favorite book.

Feel free to post first lines from your favorite book in the comments following this post.

Gazing into the black of night, he took to the heavens, soaring high above the city of lights and over the mayhem of human atrocities and the ugly suffering of reality. Wind flowed over his wings like unconditional love, erasing his burdens. Life could be cold like the rain assaulting his feathers, yet a gentle rain might wash away the dirt, the dust and purify the bad, leaving behind beauty. Therefore, existence may well be beautiful.

The glow of man-made structures reflected off his form.

The Magic of the Medicine Man

Seth Crowe in Crow Magic is a Shawnee Shaman or medicine man. He was selected as a young boy to being his training and when he hit puberty, it became apparent he was a crow shfter. He trained hard every day like a Navy SEAL would. The theory was that one had to have control over not only one’s mind, but be in the most excellent physical condition, if he were to be able to connect with the spiritual realm.  Both mind and body could hold the spirit back, thus the emphasis on training. But once the boy had a master over his mind, as well as his body, he was ready to develop the other side his nature, the spiritual side.

Medicine men were often very handsome when they were young.  Imagine, they have been trained all their life into physical alertness, they have trained to act in the best interest of their tribe, they have schooled their mind so that they us their skills only for the good of the people, and not evil, and they kept their word of honor as though their life might depend upon it.    Ritual was highly important, because a ceremony done incorrectly was believed to bring bad luck.   A medicine man was also expected to do such things as set broken bones, take care of sprains or pulled muscles and he was expected to be able to attend to deep wounds.  This they did without flinching.

Medicine men often became solitary, spending time in meditation, connecting with the earth. Mainting a balance with nature and the spirit world is a constant battle.

Seth, finds himself falling into a black hole. If he isn't rescued soon, he won't be able to return.

I spent my childhood summers at our family cottage on Coldwater Lake in Michigan. A friend of my uncle’s and a member of the local Chippewa tribe rented the cottage next door for several summers. Indian Dave would thrill my cousins and me with legends and dances of his people. He taught us the importance and spirituality regarding the balance of nature. My favorite stories of people who could shift from human to animal at will influenced me to write my own versions. My cousin and I would often wonder if the fox or eagle we saw where Indian Dave or one of his friends. Who knows…perhaps they were!

Little did I know, those stories heard around a campfire would become fodder for the Legend of the Spirit series.

The Legend of the Spirit series has hot Native American avian shifters who finally allow their spirit animal to give them a dose of their own “medicine”. Meet, Tecumseh “Seth” Crowe… a dark and very powerful shaman in Crow Magic. Then enjoy a dance with Dyami Schafer, a sexy Chippewa with golden eyes in Eagle Dance.

Crow Magic Excerpt:
“I am a man who is yours tonight, Lucy.” He walked toward her with arms out from his sides, exposing his nudity. “Draw on the power within you. Look at me. Overcome your apprehension of men. Have I not shown you gentleness?”

She nodded and approached him while tugging the strap of her sundress.

“Keep your dress on. Take it off when you are ready. This night is about you. Explore my body, learn from it, and take whatever you want. You are in control.”

He led her to the center of the blanket and faced her. She stood still with her fingertips resting on his waist. Cupping her face, he lost himself in her eyes.

“I am your instrument to use tonight. Open yourself up and delve into this opportunity I offer. I am yours to command. Do you understand what I’m saying?”

“I think so.” She considered his offer. “What do I do?”

Legend of the Spirit series book 2 - Eagle Dance
Dyami Schafer, a Native American from the Chippewa tribe, leads a lonely life due to his large size and unusual appearance. When his nesting instinct sets in, he turns to Madame Eve and 1Night Stand to help him find his spirit mate. Or at least a woman who accepts him as an eagle shifter.

Amanda Collins never stopped loving the Chippewa boy she knew from her childhood. Maybe a night with a Native American man will help her forget the past and let her move on with her life.

Sometimes, it’s necessary to take a step into the past before dancing into the future. With the help of Madame Eve, will the Spirit of the Eagle carry Dyami and Amanda?

Eagle Dance EXCERPT
She brushed the gray tips and white strands of hair that gave him such untamed nobility. With a finger, she traced his face from his temple to his jaw, across his lips, then scraping her nails along the fine hair under his chin. A man of his enormous size would be capable of great strength, and a gal could easily lose herself in his arms for more than one night. His gaze intensified under her scrutiny.

“What do you see when you look at me?” he asked and lowered his eyes. Sinfully long lashes brushed his cheeks.

She considered him to be the most gorgeous man alive. His eyes mesmerized her. Some would consider the unusual color to be eerie, but she saw a whirlwind of emotions, from pain to hope, drawing her into his soul. Did his unusual appearance cause issues and uncertainty in his life? Despite his intimidating frame, he exhibited control and gentle qualities in the tender way he’d held her when they danced and the way he’d admitted his soft spot for animals. In arms like his, a woman could find paradise in many ways.

She cupped his face and forced him to meet her gaze. “I see a handsome, mystical warrior from another world.”

“Handsome, huh? I think you need your vision checked. I am nothing more than a simple Chippewa from Michigan.” His mouth was inches from hers. “However, I can be magical and take you wherever you want to go.”

“Then dance with me,” she whispered.

My Writing Process Blog Tour

Thank you Libby Waterford for involving me in this awesome blog tour.

Libby writes California-set steamy contemporary romances. She lives in Los Angeles with her family and works off her weekly pilgrimage to in–N-Out by swimming and climbing the city’s hidden staircases. She’s currently working on a trio of novellas that take place during the reunion/commencement weekend at a New England liberal arts college. Passionate History will be released soon by Decadent Publishing. I love reunion stories so I’ll be first in line top pick this one up!

Find Libby Waterford at
Her Website     Email      Facebook      Twitter

***************************************************

What am I currently working on?
I write novellas for the 1 Night Stand series from Decadent Publishing. Right now, I am editing a steamy Native American eagle shifter romance, Eagle Dance. It’s the second book in the “Legend of the Spirit” series. (Crow Magic was the first book.) In between edits I’m working on three more Native American shifter stories for 1NS.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?
I write contemporary erotic romance and I'm currently playing with Native American shifters (crow, eagle, hawk and falcon). I use sensuality and eroticism to emphasize the spiritualism of sex and how it creates a unique bond between lovers.

Why do I write what I do?
I was told by my mentor to “write what you know”. Growing up in Michigan and spending time near a Chippewa Reservation I became enthralled with the legends and stories of the people. The tales of animal spirits and shifters show how man/nature/woman work together to create balance in life. I center my novellas on these ideas and collect my research on Tribes of the Great Lakes Region. I give special thanks to two friends, Marion Roth & Ann Orr, for my Chippewa education.

How does my writing process work?
I get an idea in my head and it wormholes me! I have to write it down! My over active imagination often creates more than one story at a time so I often work on multiple stories. Once each story is like a movie in my head and I feel like I’m simply recording it. After a story is complete, I print a hard copy and read over it making corrections with a red pen. Once all changes/corrections are complete, I submit to my publisher and prepare for edits.

Fun Friday

While I'm off working at the Montrose Blueberry Festival, I'll leave you with some fun.

The hero in Crow Magic is a Native American Shifter and the story came from the stories told every summer around the campfire at our family cottage in Michigan. Our neighbor, Indian Dave, used history, legends, and spiritual lore to weave fantasy and reality into timeless tales. My favorites included Spirit Animals and Shifters.

“Once a man opens himself to the Great Spirit, a guardian spirit in the form of an animal will be gifted upon him. This animal is a part of his soul. Some may choose his animal spirit, others will be born with theirs; the spirit within the chosen gives the body the ability to shift from human to animal The man may need to control instinctive urges as well as listen to the animal’s wisdom. The animal spirit can sense good and evil as well as the man’s one true love, the mate for both man and beast. ”Indian Dave

Crow Magic Review & Contest

Crow Magic received a 4-STAR review

"This was a far different installment to the 1Night Stand series that I am familiar with, and will certainly appeal to some readers far more than the more formulaic story arc that is more traditional in the series.  Mary Quast has created a short erotic story that nearly screams for a full length story, but that is due to the lovely characterization,  the volumes of information and the strong spiritual journey that the reader follows with Lucy as she meets and enjoys her one night with Tecumseh"
