Author Erzabet Bishop Blogs About Writing

My writing process is a mix of plotter and pantser. I rely heavily on my foam core board and colourful sticky notes to get the idea framed out then a legal pad to scribble out notes. The sticky notes are a wonderful way to go because you can move them if the plot switches and you still have a structure going.

Other tools:

Pinterest: I create a board for almost every new project I start. It helps me get into the story visually. For Club Beam, it’s all about hunky Doms, sexy witches and fairy tale fetish wear are alive and well in this fun tale.

Music: Find mood music that fits your story. For this tale I listened to lots of Maroon 5, Sia, Evanescence and other moody, witchy tunes.

Chocolate: What? You’re saying it’s not a tool? (snickers) Oh yes it is.

My books:

I love to write erotic romance and you can find me all over the spectrum from a BBW sweetish retelling of Beauty and the Beast (Lucky Stars box set), dark carnival experiences (Written on Skin) to lesbian urban fantasy (Sigil Fire). I am a finalist in the Goldie Awards this year for Sigil Fire and two other anthologies and am also a finalist in the Lammy Awards for my work in Forbidden Fruit. I am currently working on some Halloween tales, a new fairy tale with dragon shifters and a psychic and an erotic romance trilogy with cowboys. Writing is an adventure and I love crafting new stories. Under my other pen name I’m delving into YA and some darker fairy tale retellings that will have readers (I hope) wanting more. Can’t keep a good fairy tale down…
You can find  the whole list of my anthology and single title works

Writing advice:

The one thing I would tell any new writer is this. Keep writing. Don’t stop.

Consider everything in life for sources of inspiration.

Learning to look at publishers I liked to find out what their submission calls were was a helpful thing too. In this case, I was assigned a fairy tale and had to construct a modern day romance around it. Talk about fun! I’ve already asked for a new one!

Start small. Ray Bradbury said something that has always resonated with me. If you start with a short story a week, sooner or later you won’t be terrible. It works. Trust me.
Rejection. Learn to deal with it. If you want to be a writer, it’s going to happen. What you can do is learn from every one and do better on the next trip around. Put the piece to the side and go back to it later. There will be things you’ll notice, you’ll fix them and bam. You have a story someone will love. I can’t tell you how many of my works (many under a pen name) that have gone from rejection piles to published. You grow a thicker skin, listen to helpful criticism and grow.

Fit the publisher to the work. Not everyone likes the same things. If the publisher likes romance, don’t send them a picture book. If they like horror, no fluffy bunnies-unless they have fangs.

Format the work. If the publisher has submission requirements, please read them. They are there for a reason, and no that reason is not to drive you insane. If you don’t follow them, your hard work very likely will be passed over.

Join support groups.  Writers are a breed unto themselves. RWA (Romance Writers of America) is one of the hardest working groups I have come across and they want everyone to succeed. They have local branches as well as online and are always having classes to inform their members of changes in the industry. HWA (Horror Writers Association) is also a great group if you are horror bent.

Stay tuned for Sci Spanks in June and watch for the anthology with a special exclusive story from my Shadow World featuring Gideon, Miles and Syd as she learns the art of spanking. Sign up with the Facebook group so you don’t miss a thing.

Thanks for having me on the blog today. I wish you good reading and hope you will enjoy Club Beam.

Interview with Erotic Romance Author Chloe Thurlow

Welcome to this stop on the Blog Tour for Katie In Love,
the new release from erotic romance author Chloe Thurlow.

Chloe Thurlow is an amazing blogger with her short, dynamic and sometimes controversal essays. When she's not working on her blogs she's writing steamy erotic romance. Chloe is super busy these days with a new release and a huge blog tour. We are super lucky to have her stop by today!

Thanks for joining us today, Chloe. This book, Katie is Love is brilliantly written. Is this your first book? How many books have you prior?
Katie in Love is my 6th novel, but it is the first I have self-published and the first time I feel as if my blood, sweat and very soul appears pressed between the pages.

You put alot of work into the book and it shows. It's obvious you LOVE to write. How naughty do you get with your writing?  Are we talking just suggestion or downright bondage?
Erotica is a literary genre, so that blend of suggestion and the explicit should be nuanced. Sex should evolve from plot and all my books are always from the female point of view.

Readers love to hear the story behind the story. What inspired you to write your latest book? Is anything in the book based on someone you know or events in your own life?
Mmm. I met a man. I was bored with my job. I broke my finger falling on the ice in East London.  I had been making notes and thinking about who I was, where I was going, what I wanted. I put all these thoughts into a big pot, sprinkled in some hot chilli erotica and stirred in a pinch of art, philosophy and politics to create a romance that would resonate with women and with our times.

Hmm... sounds like a tasty dish.  How do you come up with your characters’ names?
The name Katie for Katie in Love dropped in my head like a leaf falling from the trees – Katie sound a bit like Chloe, of course, but that's just a coincidence. Tom is based on someone I know and love. I stole his personality, kindness and intellect to create Dr Bridge.  Tom and Katie are very different: the seeds of attraction and conflict.

Those seeds of attraction & conflict make a book too good to put down. We appoligize to readers in advance if they suffer a book hangover from staying up all night reading. A good book is like a movie, except the reader sees the film in her head. If you could have any movie star take on a leading role, who would it be?
Emily Blunt would play Katie all the way to the Oscars in Katie in Love. Felicity Jones was born to play Bella in my first novel, The Secret Life of Girls.

LOVE Emily Blunt!!!  Now back to writing, you are amazing but every author travels a journey. What would you say were the hardest scenes to write for you?
My earlier novels were personal growth, coming of age stories, and linear. There is an easy A to B to C structure. Katie in Love is a romance with reflection, regret, misunderstandings and envy (Katie for Tom's ex-girlfriend, a French cellist named Marie-France). Scenes where Katie is going through changes were complex and needed to be subtle. I tried to make the reader feel for Katie and identify with the pain of change. When Katie sees Marie-France performing in concert, her feelings are so sharp I wanted to prick the readers tear ducts into for a little sob of sympathy and empathy.

I think you handled the complexity with beauty and grace. Periodically a writer has to come up for air and visit real life. What is the strangest thing you’ve experienced while working on a story?
Two strange things happened: the first, when I started writing the book, I saw a woman jump from the Albert Bridge in Chelsea. She was swept away on the strong current.  I learned later that she died and was reminded that all things are impermanent.
OMG!!! I can see how that can make one take a moment to remember the constant flow of life.
Another time, I was drinking cava with a girlfriend named Lizzie Woodham in a bar in Wardour Street. We saw two people I am sure were strangers, a woman in a gold dress and a man with a huge moustache, first dancing and then having sex  in a dark booth in the corner of the bar. The girl reminded me of me when I was younger.

Lordy, I might have to ask you what you were like "back in the day". We could have fun swapping stories over a glass or four of vino. That will have to be saved for another day. Say, I like the simplicity of your book title. How did you come up with it?
My other books all have the word GIRL in the title. Katie in Love is a romance, and Katie is a woman, not a girl. I thought: mmm, I need the word LOVE. Now, who is the book really about? Katie. So, there it was: Katie in Love.

Readers will for sure love Katie in Love! Do you have anything you would like to say to your peeps in cyberland?
Yes, please buy my book. It changed my life and it may change yours, too

BLURB
Katie Boyd has nothing in common with Tom Bridge, the volunteer doctor she meets at a party – except in bed she finds a passion to match her own. Tom is intense, puzzling, a man who cares about others and compels Katie to question her own life drifting through the hip clubs and London party scene.

When Tom returns to his post in a Sri Lanka orphanage, Katie isn’t sure if their passion was lit by its brevity, or if love, unexpected and not entirely wanted, has edged its way into her life. Should she go back to being who she always was? Or follow Tom into the unknown?

Katie in Love is a compelling erotic-romance that will grip readers as they follow Katie’s journey to an ending they may have expected – but not in the way they expected it.

Brilliantly written and coolly self-aware, Chloe Thurlow was described by KM Dylan on Amazon as “…the Anaïs Nin of our times.” With Katie in Love  – her sixth novel – Thurlow reveals a writer at the height of her powers.

Erotic Author Clare Dargin Talks About Her New Book

Clare Dargin is an author of science fiction, paranormal romance, military sci-fi as well as interracial and multicultrual fiction. This amazing gal with her over active imagination has given us stories that are out of this world!

[Ménage Amour: Erotic Ménage a Trois Romance, M/F/M, HEA]
A Siren Erotic Romance

Jilly Reimers wants love but can't find it. Chris Spinell is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan who suffers from PTSD and a haunting feeling that something is missing in his life. Chris Poole is also an Afghanistan war veteran is ready to break out of his shell but is unsure how.

With Christmas just around the corner, they decide not to spend it alone. Believing The Love Play Matchmaking Service to be just what they need for a night of fun and passion, they sign up. But when the guys show up and see that they've been set up on a menage, the only one happy about it is Jilly.

Their consultant, called an Eros, assures Jilly that the service has a perfect track record but she's certain they'll be the first ones to get their money back. Will they have a very merry Christmas? Or will the three spend yet another one alone?

Thank you Clare for joining us on this blustery winter day. I have coffee, tea and hot cocoa available. Just help yourself.

Now, you have some sci-fi romance stories and some military. How many books have you prior to Merry "Chris"Mas?
Actually it's my seventh.  Yay!!! Believe me it's a triumph considering it had been a dream of mine to be published ever since I was thirteen years old.

You have a hyper imagination like me. I get ideas all the time for new stories. What inspired you to write your Merry "Chris"Mas? Is anything in the book based on someone you know or events in your own life?
LOL!  Oh boy that's a loaded question.  How do I respond?  Well, I'll answer the second question first-- I don't know them personally but the characters are inspired by real people.  I saw a meme on a social network that I'm on and I got to thinking some naughty thoughts and the story kinda told itself.

Sounds like the story was easy. Come on, fess up. What was the hardest or most challenging part to write?
Without giving anything away, it was the central conflict between the two guys because they are so likable and easy going.  I just wanted every one to get along.

Who did you picture when you created the hero?
For the two heroes a couple of well known personas- that's all I'm going to say for now.  ;)

Sorry.... I spaced out for a minute as I imagined who it might be. LOL How do you come up with your characters’ names?
Normally, I utilize my reference list and then see if a name fits the individual character.  And sometimes there's an automatic match and then there are times when I have to resort to the internet and I hunt down the perfect name for hours!

Which character is your favorite?
I can't choose!  I love them both!  Believe me! They are my dream guys.

I love the title, how did you come up with it?
I had a theme in mind when I thought of the series and a specific time of year in which it would be set, so it made since do a play on words.

The cover is super smexy. Who designed it.
Harris Channing at Siren Bookstrand designed it.  She did an awesome job.  I love the balance of color and the sense of a winter chill along with the seasonal theme of Christmas without it being too Christmas-y with wreaths and bulbs everywhere which may not play as well during other times of the year (it was released December 24, 2014).  I think this way it doesn't look like a Christmas book.  But looks like a book that takes place during the holiday season but could just as easily be set during a different time of year.

Fan want to know...give them a fun fact or more about the book.
Since I live in Michigan, I place a lot of fun tidbits about my home state through out.  Things I think only a native Michigander may know.  If you are Michigander especially one who lives or has lived in the Metro Detroit area, you'll point and say, I know that!  Whoa!

As a fellow Michigander, I've noticed that. *wink, wink* Love it!!! One of these days we need to zip over to the Ann Arbor area and check out the brewery owned by fellow romance author, Liz Crowe. Just don't wear any of your State gear.
Back on subject...are you currently working on something?
I'm always working on projects.  Currently I'm working on an shifter romance for a different publisher and I hope to have that completed very soon!

Squeeee!!! I have a hunch I know who it's for. I can't wait!!! Before we head out to brave the Michigan weather, do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Yes.  Thank you so much for your patience and support.  Since I don't write full time, I have to write whenever I get a chance and it really means a lot that you've stuck by me for so long.  I promise this book and the others within the series will not let you down.

I'm sure you won't, Clare. Thank you for visiting with us today!

Be sure to visit Clare and check out not only her latest book but all of them. Perfect reading for these cold winter nights.

Looking for a Lesbian Werewolf Erotic Romance?

Sometimes such a simple thing can lead to such an unexpected and wonderful future…

“Second Saturday.” Ed. Liz Silver. Musa Publishing, Forthcoming July 2012.
ISBN: 978-1-61937-295-5

I'd like to welcome Stan Hampton
who joins us today to talk about his hot Lesbian, shifter, erotic romance.

Give us the  Story Behind Second Saturday

So, what is the inspiration behind the lesbian werewolf erotic romance, Second Saturday?
Pardon me while I play Loreena McKennitt’s Nights from the Alhambra, particularly The Mummer’s Dance and Huron ‘Beltane’ Fire Dance. I have always enjoyed her music, whether I am relaxing or writing.
            Anyway, the inspiration?
Well, I once saw a Call for Submissions for a lesbian shapeshifter anthology. The subject sounded interesting, even challenging, as I had never written anything like that. After all, I am a man. What did I know of lesbians, especially lesbian shapeshifters? I finally decided to give it a try—and the story was not accepted for the anthology.
Second Saturday is a fairly simple story made up of several elements.
There is in Las Vegas, a monthly arts event called First Friday. Once a month, on the first Friday of the month, the arts district located not far from Fremont Street in Old Las Vegas hosts an evening long art crawl. Large crowds wander among the various shops and studios, and arts and crafts stalls, food stalls, and beer stalls.
By nature and experience I am a photographer and a people watcher. I also have an interest in painting, drawing, and sculpting—unfortunately, in spite of having taken several college classes, I have yet to discover my natural talent for those skills. One can always hope.
And regarding the two characters, Sharon Rogers, a bicurious UNLV art student, and Patricia Renner, a lesbian and an attorney… Not meaning to sound sexist, but is there not something beautiful about two women making love with one another?
As for the shapeshifter element—researching a different story I once read of the Greek historian Herodotus and his claim that northwest of the now-Black Sea there was a tribe that turned into wolves once a year. The tribe was called the Neuri.
After Second Saturday was rejected for the anthology I let the story sit for a little while, then went back and did some writing and editing. I knew that I had a viable story, and even a subject that was deserving of additional stories.
Fortunately, events proved my belief correct.
The chaos that is life sometimes gets in the way of writing; I have not added to the story of the Neuri since the publication of Second Saturday in 2012. But I have not forgotten them.
So, for a moment imagine yourself in a Mycenaean king’s columned hall, one of many gathered around a smoky, flame-filled hearth. The evening has already heard of Jason and his search for the Golden Fleece, and of Helen and the Mycenaean and Trojan heroes who fought over her before the walls of Troy.

There remains other tales to be told before the fire becomes glowing embers in a silent night—tales of strong warriors, part wolf, who came from the frozen north where colorful spirits danced in the night sky. Even the Neuri women, born with sword and spear in hand, were unafraid of men and death and were likewise unafraid to love other women…

BLURB: Sharon Rogers is a young university student in Las Vegas, working part-time at a nearby donut shop. She is hard at work one morning when Patricia Renner enters the shop--and Sharon's life. Not long after meeting Patricia, she begins dreaming. Sharon turns her dreams of male and female warriors with wolves' heads into sculptures. When Sharon and her fellow art students band together to host an "art crawl" for the public, she invites Patricia to attend, hoping to seduce her. However, Sharon discovers that Patricia is intent on seducing her; not only that, Patricia is very territorial and will not permit rivals for Sharon's hand. Patricia has a secret, though, and Sharon must accept it if they are to be together forever.

EXCERPT: Sharon Rogers opened her eyes and stared at the darkness of her bedroom ceiling with the echo of the tremulous howls still ringing faintly in her ears. Many times before, she had dreamed of powerful warriors; men and women, who ran with giant wolves across moonlit steppes. With the fading of the dream she felt an unexplained pang of loss.
As a matter of routine, Sharon woke very early; when she wasn’t a starving university student, she worked part-time at the Mom and Pop Donut Emporium not far from the university. Baking and icing trays of donuts and serving coffee was her momentary purpose in life.
Though she had the day off, she grumbled about having such an early rising job—in spite of the Ground Zero recession with so many Las Vegans out of work—and went back to sleep. When she finally awakened, she lay naked in her large bed and stared at the whirling ceiling fan.
It was Saturday, the first “Second Saturday” for the Maryland Parkway Salon, as the local group of university students called themselves. The students who lived in the weathered apartment buildings had spent two months planning this art crawl. For a few hours, the public could visit apartments where art work was for sale, help themselves to refreshments in the sandy lot between the buildings, and visit with the artists in their workshops at the back of the lot.
If Second Saturday was successful, they planned to hold more art crawls every couple of months.
But for Sharon, Second Saturday had the potential to be much more than an art show.
First, there were the more than a dozen foot-high clay figures that she had sculpted and fired. The figures were of naked men and women with wolves’ heads—warriors armed with shields, spears, and swords. As an artist, Sharon appreciated the human male and female form, and she loved wolves. The two subjects complemented one another, reinforced by dreams she’d had. She was hoping to sell one or more of the figures.
Second, was the boorish Rodney Boatman, a sometime-patron at the donut shop. He was a delivery driver for a local company. He hit on her frequently, never taking no for an answer. When he saw the flyer announcing Second Saturday, he had promised to show up and take her out for dinner and drinks afterward. She dreaded his possible appearance.
            Third, was Patricia Renner…

Wowaz! Since he's new here, I thought I'd give a little bio for him.

Author Interview with Brina Brady

Brina Brady is the author of the hot new book, Rent Me, available on Amazon and Smashwords. Brina's genre is M/M erotic contemporary romance and she's been busy promoting this story with a little bit of taboo and a whole lot of HOT. I managed to catch up with her for a little interview.

Let's just jump in, what’s the kinkiest, sexiest thing you’ve ever done?
My best friend and I got trapped in a boat with these two guys we picked up. We both were having sex with our male partners in the same room. The strangest thing is we bumped into each other some how. Weird. Way back when I was young and crazy.

Oh, the days of being young and crazy. Now we're older and...maybe I better not continue that thought. LOL
How naughty do you get with your writing?  Are we talking just suggestion or downright bondage?
Extremely naughty.  Bondage and explicit sexual encounters for the two males. My story was a bout a Rent Boy and he was not shy.

No, he certainly isn't shy but that's what I love about him. What’s the best thing you’ve ever written—the best line?
This is from Bend Over, my WIP from Brennen.
No one will ever know my secret unless one of them tells on me. But that didn’t mean I wasn’t going to hell for what I had done. Certain sins were unforgivable especially when both the Reverend and Mom warned me many times.

Sweet! Oh, you are such a tease!
If you could have any movie star take on a role as one of your heroes, who would it be?
I want the young Travis Fimmel with his long blond hair to be Shane O’Rourke in my new novel Bend Over. I would want the young Charlie to be Brennen.

I L O V E Travis Fimmel. One of my characters was based on his delicious looks. Size counts… on average how loooooonnnnnggg do you like your (um, how do we put it delicately) manuscripts to be; (in words silly, not inches) and how steamy?
I like novels to be at least 100,000 words and very steamy.

Steamy is good!  What are the hardest scenes to write for you?
I wrote a lap dance scene between two men and that was difficult.

How close in real life, have you gotten to one of your fantasies?
Not close at all since I write about two men sleeping together and I am a woman.

LOL. What bit of romantic advice would you give your readers?
Be honest and faithful.

And finally… anything you would like to share with us, an excerpt, a tidbit, or anything else about yourself?
I am a Los Angeles retired high school teacher. I worked in the Juvenile correction facilities and loved it. Now, I write and read.

Write, read, write, read... that's a perfect life!  Thanks for joining use today, Brina!  I hope all our readers check out your new book, Rent Me.

Rent Boy Brennen wants to belong to his lover Dmitri Dubrovsky. The Russian mobster controls every inch of his life in and out of bed. Brennen works for Dmitri’s escort service. His only desire is to please his lover.

When Dmitri marries Nika, his lover moves him out of their home to an apartment in Beverly Hills and tells him nothing has changed.

What is Brennen going to do now?

Tuesday Teaser - Club Wicked 3.5: My Wicked Trainers by Ann Mayburn

At a secret location outside of Washington DC there is a private club where the rich and powerful go to indulge in their most wicked fetishes and desires. Established in 1903, Wicked has hosted everyone from presidents to gangsters, from innocent small town girls to famous Hollywood starlets indulging in the painful pleasures of the dungeons.

Ann Mayburn is an excellent erotic story teller and certainly has the ability to seduce readers one book at a time. I love her Club Wicked Series and had the opportunity to read a little short from the collection.

The first thing that pulled my attention is characters are attending university and living in Leicester, England… a place I know very well and incredibly fond of. Second, I have a soft spot for hunky rugby players so Mayburn had me drooling on the screen of my poor Kindle. The characters in this story have a possibility to develop a greater relationship. Full of sexual tension, this story left me wanting more.

BLURB: Best mates Liam and Rory have an accidental drunken sexual encounter, spurred on by the usually straight Rory's powerful attraction to his equally straight friend. Afterwards, Liam freaks out, and Rory's worried he'll lose not only his roommate, but also his best friend. But when Rory brings home his sexy and eager submissive, Susie, and proposes a menage, the men just may have found a way to repair the rift, but only if Liam can overcome his conservative upbringing and trust his natural instinct to Dominate.

Fetish Friday - A BDSM Virgin

This is a post previously featured on Romance Writers Behaving Badly.

I started wring a sweet romance about a one night stand between a lady cop and a lawyer but somewhere along the line the characters took over the story and sexed it up.  Bring out the leather and restraints... I was off to write about something I had no idea about.

So what did I do?

What any good author does... RESEARCH.  Here's where hubby had that Cheshire Cat grin.
No, really... I poured over books (fiction & non-fiction), interviewed various Doms and subs then finally let my imagination go.

According to Wikipedia: "BDSM is a consensual lifestyle choice, or type of adult role-play between two or more individuals. The compound acronym, BDSM, is derived from the terms bondage and discipline (B&D), dominance and submission (D&S), and sadism and masochism (S&M). BDSM includes a wide spectrum of activities, forms of interpersonal relationships, and distinct subcultures."

I found the best help on the subject (other than personal interviews) was the online site Seekers.  This site states, "D/s is a lifestyle choice, Domination and submission, where people live their lives opting by nature to be either Dominant or submissive. In a relationship the one complements the other and is based on the gift of submission, and absolute trust."  I must say this insight was not only helpful with my work, but I also thought the owners handled the subject in a fundamental and kindly manner.

Writing Handcuffs & Silk became a whole new experience for me and opened a door I always thought was best kept closed.   Not only did I become a better writer because of my research but I've also developed a sincere respect for my friends who delve into this world.
(And hubby is still smiling.)
Never be afraid to ask questions, the answers may amaze you.

In honor of Friday Night Football
I'm sharing one of my favorite authors.

The last thing event planner Tara Lincoln needs is the jet-set lifestyle of a football pro like Mick Riley; even though their steamy and passionate one-night stand proved that Mick is an all-star-both on the field and in the bedroom.

Tara played the game of love once and lost big, and she doesn't intend to put herself out there again, especially with a certified heartbreaker. But when Mick sets his mind to win, nothing will stop him. And he has the perfect play in mind to catch this sultry vixen.

Tueday Teaser from Mean Girl, Lucy Felthouse

Lucy Felthouse is here today to tease us with her new erotic romance novella, Mean Girls.

Adele Blackthorne is a big girl, a curvy chick. She knows it, and she’s been picked on all her life because of it. But she’s gotten to the stage where she doesn’t care. She may be Rubenesque, but she’s healthy, too. Much healthier than the mean girls at the leisure center that point and stare and say spiteful things about her. Adele rises above it all, and simply enjoys her secretive glances at the center’s hunky lifeguard, Oliver.

As the bullying of Adele becomes worse, Oliver finds it increasingly difficult not to intervene. He doesn’t want to get into trouble with work, but equally he can’t stand to see Adele treated in such a horrible way. Especially since he doesn’t agree that she’s fat and unattractive. He thinks she’s a seriously sexy woman, and would like to get to know her better. Much better.
